A second car for the winter: not such a crazy idea

You recently purchased your dream, brand new (or used) car, and your heart breaks each and every time they announce a weather alert, storms, or record levels of snow on the radio? You can’t endure the sight of your mechanical love trapped in a snow circle so high it prevents you from opening your door? If you answered “yes” to one of these questions, you might consider buying a second car for the winter. It mays seem like a ridiculous idea, or one that should only be reserved to wealthy individuals, but when you take all the factors into consideration, it’s really not that crazy.
The risk of accident
All Quebec’s drivers know very well that driving during the winter is a sport in and of itself, and one that doesn’t stop when you shut down your car. First, there is an increased risk of accident. You’re an outstanding driver that manages to go safely from point A to point B in all seasons? All right, now do you also trust that much the people you share the road with? Probably not. A “winter car” will give you the peace of mind you need by reducing to zero the risk of accidents implicating your main vehicle.

Weather and road conditions

Even if you’re lucky enough to go through the whole winter without being part of a collision, the cold season wears your vehicle in so many other ways: the de-icing salt spread on the road is the main corrosion factor for chassis. You’re used to work the gas pedal until your car is free from snow banks? Think again. Sand and snow splatters can scratch your car. Even a not-so- snowy winter can damage your vehicle if it’s very, very cold: flat batteries and cracked pipes are tangible consequences of the extreme temperatures we’re accustomed to.

Maintenance and resale value
Also consider that having a second car means never having to prepare the main one for the winter (tire change, anticorrosion treatment, protective pellicles, etc.), and also spending half as many time on the road compared to a scenario with having only one car. The non-exposition to winter and the lower mileage are considerable factors when it comes to the resale value of your vehicle.

It goes without saying that owning two vehicles is not within the reach of everyone, but if you can afford it, don’t reject the idea without giving it a second thought: it’s not as crazy as it sounds.
